listen to house speaker john boehner talk about conversations with the president. they are talking, soledad. the staff of both the white house and house republicans are in touch, but speaker boehner said about his sunday conversation with president obama that it was cordial, and then he said about his tuesday conversation with the president that it was deliberate and frank. so you -- it doesn't take too much to read between the lines there to show you that things are not going that well. they have exchanged another set of counteroffers to no avail, and still at this point there is this impasse over tax rates. the white house, president obama saying that the income tax rate for earnings over a quarter million dollars must go up. republicans saying no and accusing the president of not being specific about spending cuts and entitlement reforms, reform medicare, medicaid and social security. >> so let me ask you a question about this report that we're hearing that the obama administration might be looking at a republican to succeed the defense secretary, leon panetta. who is on that li

massive tax hikes and spending cuts. congress breaking in a week for the holiday. so john boehner trying to simplify things. he's asking top democrats and republica republicans to step aside so he can negotiate with the president one-on-one. it seems to be a request that everyone was able to live with. brianna keilar is live for us at the white house. if this is the case that everybody has been cleared out of the room, does that surprise you? it seems to make sense to me. >> reporter: it's not surprising at all. this is what observers of this process thought would happen all along. ultimately this was a process that would come down to president obama and house speaker john boehner brokering a deal. very much the way you saw they attempted to do during the debt ceiling debacle last year. it simplifies the problem of less cooks in the kitchen. then they will have to sell it. president obama would have to bring in democrats. john boehner would have to bring in his republicans and make sure everyone is on board. this comes on the heels of what has really been radio silence between the white
